The Ministry of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship (IRCC) has received notification from the Kenya High Commission in Ottawa, Canada, that the Canadian government has imposed a two-year restriction on the number of foreign students admitted.
The cap was immediately put into effect, and it is anticipated that 360,000 study permits will be approved—a 35% drop from 2023. Fairness-driven weighted population-based limitations on specific provinces and territories will cause substantially larger reductions in the provinces with the highest rates of unsustainable increase in the population of overseas students. Renewals of study permits won’t be affected. The cap does not apply to those seeking master’s and doctorate degrees, as well as those studying primary and secondary education. Those who currently have study permits won’t be impacted
A part of the cap will be given by the IRCC to each province and territory, which will subsequently be divided among the approved educational institutions. An attestation letter from a province or territory will be necessary for every study visa application submitted to the IRCC beginning January 22, 2024, to implement the cap. It is anticipated that provinces and territories will set up a procedure for providing students with attestation letters.
